Will the modern world achieve peace or will we spend the future still engulfed in wars ?

            In my opinion there will be a little bit hard and complicated to avoid war. Especially in this globalization era where anything could be more possible and easy to happen. Research and development are growing fast. There are also Innovation of Technology Phenomenon, cyber activites, advances of information technology and many more that recently has been growing. And the problem is those development and advancements are also applicable for a country to ugrade their own alutsista and equipments. Logically, we will have such sophisticated equipments in modern world which has been prepared and designed to prevent or used for future war, and it apparently has been doing by several countries now.

            So, my answer for the question about will the modern world achieve peace is more likely no or in other words it’s not that easy to achieve peace. Whether peace that happens after war or maintain peace. Some sources said that peace is achievable after war, or if you want peace, prepare for war (Si vis pacem, para bellum).[1] Moreover there are other reasons why the future still engulfed in wars.

The Shape of Unconventional Wars

            The world changes, the problem changes either. In some occasion, war is no longer about fighting, killing, or something identical with violence as conventional war like it used to be. Although there is still conventional war happens especially in the Middle East, but we may also have new concern and serious problem now about modern war or unconventional war such as Cyber war. Why cyber war become serious problem for future? Because I think cyber war can attack everyone and everything. And it can bring countries engage in war. As Israel defense expert Yair Cohen, said “we live in world where there are 500 million cyber attacks happen in every seconds against information technology”.[2] He also said, cyber attack can cause political turmoil, social, and economic in a country. He added that cyber war can paralyze enemy’s aircraft without a pilot and also can minimize the risk of death. That phonemenon can portray that cyber war has became an option for some countries or groups (hackers) to do their mission to attack their enemies. And this cyber war actually still happen until now and become a challenge for international security.

The Emergence of Extremist Groups and Terrorism

            This is also one of the main reasons we will still engage in war in the future. Since 9/11 tragedy happened, the United States had concern against terrorism through “War on Terror” policy. The existence of terrorism recently was getting worse. After the phenomenon of Al-Qaeda, there are many extremist groups have risen for example Taliban and ISIS. And I think we will be always fighting against terrorism for long time periods because it’s hard to destroy and stopping terrorism activities.

            For example in Afghanistan war against Taliban. Not only Afghanistan that fight against Taliban, but also The United States and  other countries also contribute to destroy Taliban. But in fact, Taliban cannot be defeated and rise again recently. So I think fighting against Terrorism  still become the main reason for future wars.

Arab Spring

The Arab Spring was a series of anti-government protests, uprisings and armed rebellions that spread across the Middle East in early 2011. Chronic instability in countries undergoing political transitions have put additional strain on struggling local economies, and deep divisions have emerged between the Islamists and secular Arabs.[3] In my opinion, the phenomenon of Arab Spring has potential of causing war in the future. Especially the Middle Eart issues is getting complex. There are so many countries and groups join the conflict with so many interest in it. Arab Spring also identical with Extrimist Groups and insurgent that causing chaos. And it haven’t ended yet until now.
